Brad's friend at Berkeley, Kathy Vencill,
wrote this wonderful poem about Brad after she had reflected on her relationship with him. It is a tribute to him and eloquently states what many of his friends have told his family about how he affected those around him.

To Brad

I can't imagine why your precious life was stolen away, leaving all of us stunned by the void
and vast emptiness.
So young
So soon
So unexpected
So special
So loved by EVERYONE
No, this could never happen to one of us, no one we would know, certainly not us...

But my words feel meaningless and trival.
Nothing I could conjure up could possibly do justice in honoring your life
Only silence and reflection seem appropriate for this somber mood.

We are all experiencing the shock of losing you, Brad.
My head is filled with images of you and your exceptional character.
I see you laughing, smiling.
The sound of your music is emanating joy throughout the room.
Now you are dancing across from me. You're looking so "less than zero" with your sunglasses
hung halfway down your nose, oxford shirt untucked and loose tie. You're doing a tremendous
job of staying in character for our 80's party - all I can do is grin.

I'm watching and noticing what a caring and selfless individual you are...
You are a driven soul - brave and courageous.
Self-sacrificing.
I see you training your heart out to raise money to help others -
to make a difference in the lives of those suffering with AIDS.
Honorable.

I want you to know that I think you are distinctive and unique
and you've made a huge impression on me.
All of your wonderful qualities have touched me and I will
never forget you, nor the impact you've made on the lives
of all those who knew you. I'm consumed with sadness.
So, I'm sending my love to you wherever you are...

Kathy
