2004 Scholarship Recipients |
Birthday - On October 10th, 2004, Brad would have been 27 years old. We reflect on the many happy birthdays that we celebrated with him and we ask you to join in remembering the wonderful young man that he was. Scholarships - Thanks to your generous contributions, we are pleased to announce that the Brad Evans Foundation was able to award two scholarships to assist with the expenses of two Berkeley freshmen. The first was awarded to Zorbey Ozdilek (Corona del Mar H. S.) whose amazing story of coming to the U.S. in 1997 speaking no English and then accomplishing so much in academics and life, was so compelling that the decision was unanimous. Zorbey is a remarkable young man and is excited about beginning his Berkeley odyssey. Zorbey impressed the committee with his intelligence and his tenacity. He is majoring in business administration. The committee was so impressed with a second applicant that it decided to make a second award. Doris Do (Newport Harbor H.S.) knows the value of family and hard work. She is focused and goes well beyond what is expected of her at home, at work, and in school. Berkeley will be enriched by her presence and we look forward to following her progress. Doris is majoring in science. Harbor View School's PFO awarded their 2004 Brad Evans Memorial Scholarship to Taylor Munz. Taylor is a remarkably talented and personable young man who is a favorite of all who know him. He has traveled extensively with both his family and friends and is a true citizen of the world. He graduated from Corona del Mar and is enjoying his freshman year studying mechanical engineering at St. Mary's in Moraga, California. The Brad Evans Foundation Fund donated money to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Harbor Area to help provide scholarships to their basketball camps. Brad loved basketball and was especially enthusiastic about his years of participation in the program provided at the East Bluff Boys and Girls Club. Many hours of practice and evenings of competition were considered pure fun by Brad who enjoyed every moment of his time there. The committee authorized the donation to honor Brad's love of the game and the experience he had thanks to this wonderful organization. Vehicle donation - This past year two more car donors have designated the Brad Evans Foundation as recipient. The web page has the link for providing people with the opportunity to donate an unwanted car, RV, boat or other vehicle, get a tax deduction, and benefit Brad's Foundation. We ask that if you know anyone who has a vehicle they will donate, please refer them to the web site or ask them to contact us. The first annual Warren Steinberg Leadership Institute and Amy Biehl International Youth Festival were held this summer. Under the inspired leadership of Lucy Steinberg, these exciting events offered opportunities for our area's middle and high school students to come together, hear presentations about conflict resolution, and enjoy a variety of creative experiences. The Brad Evans Foundation was invited to participate by sponsoring a writing contest focused on Peace in Action and we are excited and pleased to be associated with these organizations Photographs - In the past year, Brad's family received several photographs of Brad to add to our family albums. If you have family photographs that include Brad, we would like to borrow them, make copies, and return originals to you. This includes movies or videotape footage as well. Your ongoing expressions and acts of love and concern, especially as we approach January 28th, mean so much to Brad's parents, brothers, and sisters-in-law. Most of you realize that this loss is one that we will never understand. We continue to learn to live with what we have of Brad; the memory of his talent, humor, loyalty, and goodness. We continually treasure the lesson that Brad taught us of seeking and appreciating the good in all people. The Foundation retains the goal of fulfilling our initial hope; that it serve to keep Brad's name alive and vibrant in our community and in the minds of those who knew him or knew of him. His family welcomes your tax-exempt contribution to the Brad Evans Foundation as we plan for future scholarships to our local U.C. Berkeley-bound students as well as expand the supporting of other people and causes about which he cared.

Brad's Birthday - 2002
|
As a way of celebrating the birthday of our dear Brad who would have been 25 this October 10th, we send you greetings, gratitude, and a bit of news. Thank you all for your ongoing expressions and acts of love and concern especially as we approach January 28th. So many of you realize that this loss is one that we will never understand. We hope, however, that we are learning to live with what we have of Brad; the memory of his talent, humor, loyalty, and goodness. We treasure so the lesson that Brad taught us of finding and responding to the good in all people. We share with you news of the second recipient of the Brad Evans Scholarship. Ryan Schultheis from Newport Harbor High School was our unanimous choice. His application revealed a talented and considerate young man with great strength of character and we are happy that he is off to such a fine start at Berkeley. The Foundation is fulfilling our initial hope that it serve to keep Brad's name alive and vibrant in our community and in the minds of those who knew, or knew of, him. If you wish to, we welcome your contribution to the Brad Evans Foundation. We plan for future scholarships to be expanded and offer even more help to one or more of our local UC Berkeley-bound students. Another opportunity, as well, is coming up. On October 10th, please spend a minute or two of your busy day thinking about Brad. If you knew him well personally, your mind will surely be filled with happy memories inspired by the photos on this card. If you're friends of other members of our family, consider the pictures and know how much we all gained by knowing him, even for the short time he was with us.
